How it works

Three steps. No copy-pasting answers into spreadsheets.

  1. Add your buyer questions

The questions your buyers really ask, like “best CRM for a small agency”, written in plain words.

  2. We run them on real engines

OpenCited asks ChatGPT and Perplexity your questions directly and reads the answers. More engines are coming.

  3. Get your report

Mentions, citations, competitors, insights and your AI Visibility Score, all in one place.

What's in the report

Every answer, broken down into what matters.

Sample row: Acme is named and cited once; Northwind and Globex appear as alternatives. Sample data.
  • Mentions

Whether each answer names your brand, and in what context.

  • Citations

Which sources each engine links to, and whether any of them are your pages.

  • Competitors

Who gets recommended next to you, or instead of you.

  • Insights

Plain-language notes on where you're showing up and where you're missing.

  • AI Visibility Score

One 0–100 number, peer-relative to the competitors you track and tracked over time, with the formula in the open.

Open source

Built in the open. Checkable by anyone.

Read the code, run it yourself, and see exactly how every answer is collected.

Open source

Read every line before you run it.

Self-hostable

Run the web app and worker on your own stack.

Your data stays yours

Your workspace data is private to your team. Queries go to the engines you choose.

Real engines, not simulations

ChatGPT and Perplexity, not synthetic answers.

Open source on GitHub

Buyers now ask ChatGPT or Perplexity before they ever visit your website, and most brands can't see what those answers say. Checking by hand works for a few questions once — not for every question, on every engine, again and again. So I built OpenCited to do that checking for you, and made it open source so you can see exactly how it works.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

Which AI engines does OpenCited check?

ChatGPT and Perplexity today. More engines are coming, and we'll add them as they're ready.

How is this different from SEO tools?

SEO tools track where your pages rank in search results. OpenCited reads the answers AI engines actually give to your buyers' questions: whether your brand is named, whether your pages are cited as sources, and which competitors show up instead.

How often do my questions run?

Whenever you want. Runs are manual: start one question or all of them from your dashboard in a click, and OpenCited keeps every result so you can see how the answers change over time.

What's the difference between a mention and a citation?

A mention is when an answer names your brand. A citation is when an answer links to one of your pages as a source. You can be mentioned without being cited, and cited without being mentioned, so OpenCited tracks both.

Is my data private?

Your project data is private to your workspace. Queries are sent to the engines you choose; because OpenCited is open source, you can read exactly what it stores, or run it yourself and keep everything on your own servers.

How much does it cost?

OpenCited is free during beta.

Can I self-host OpenCited?

Yes. The code is on GitHub, and the README has a self-hosting guide. You run the web app and a Docker-based worker, and bring your own Postgres, Redis, Clerk account and OpenAI-compatible API key.
